Kids and Constipation

Kids, like anyone else, can become constipated from time to time. During potty training, children often ignore the urge to go in fear of using the toilet, which can help contribute to constipation. Kids can also become constipated from iron in vitamins, their diet, and a lack of exercise.

Helping your child make healthy lifestyle choices can help prevent constipation. Eating a nutritious, high-fiber diet with plenty of water may not only help prevent constipation, but can also be a delicious way to start encouraging healthy habits for your child.

Try giving your kids high-fiber foods like:
• Apple slices
• Sandwiches with whole wheat bread
• Peanut butter and celery
• Oatmeal with almonds and walnuts
• Fresh fruit salad
• Dry cereal

If your child does become constipated, always consult your child's healthcare professional before giving him or her an over-the-counter product.
