A new survey commissioned by the makers of Dulcolax probed subjects women typically avoid talking about, including age, weight and constipation. The survey showed constipation as women’s most closely guarded secret.
Constipation affects millions of women nationwide and women would rather not talk about it. In fact, women stated that experiencing and talking about constipation are equally uncomfortable. Further survey results are as follows:

Mum’s the word… Unfortunately |
|
| |
• An overwhelming majority (91%) of women surveyed would rather reveal their age than admit that they are constipated.
• Most women (78%) would rather discuss their weight than talk to a neighbor about constipation.
• Nearly two-thirds of women (66%) would rather try on bathing suits than talk about constipation.
• When asked whom they would confide in if they were constipated, only one in four women indicated they would tell their doctor. A similar percentage (23%) wouldn’t tell anyone at all.
• Nearly one-third (32%) of women indicated it would be harder for them to discuss constipation with a pharmacist than a yeast infection.

Sheepish in Shopping for Laxatives |
|
| |
• Nearly one in five (17%) women said they would rather get a speeding ticket than have their laxatives “price checked” at their pharmacy or supermarket check-out counter.
• Almost one in five (18%) women confess to having taken some type of extra measure to avoid being seen buying laxatives.
- Of these women who have taken an extra measure to avoid being seen purchasing laxatives, more than half have hidden them under other items in their shopping cart. There are the few who have taken it one step further by shopping late at night or sending a friend or family member to pick laxatives up for them. Then, there are the few “extremists” who have gone as far as to shop in a different neighborhood altogether.

The Discomfort of Constipation |
|
| |
• When compared to other uncomfortable situations, the women surveyed were just as likely to say being constipated is as uncomfortable as a gynecological exam.
• If given a choice, roughly an equal number of women would choose to undergo a root canal as deal with frequent constipation.
• Constipation is so uncomfortable that many women seem willing to make sacrifices to ensure they’d never again be constipated, including giving up chocolate for three months (47%), forgoing wearing make-up for a month (41%), and giving up shopping for six months (21%).
• When asked which of a number of occasions would be the worst situation to be constipated, more than half (51%) of women said while traveling, followed by on a date (19%) and on a job interview (13%).

Methodological Notes
The Dulcolax Taboo Topics survey was conducted by Kelton Research among women over 18 nationally between May 25th and May 31st, 2007. All decimals are rounded to the nearest percentage point. This may result in certain numerical totals adding up to slightly more or slightly less than 100%
